The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic actors, Manoj Kumar, who passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai. Known as "Bharat Kumar" for his patriotic roles, Manoj Kumar was a legendary figure in Hindi cinema, leaving behind a rich legacy of memorable performances and timeless films. His death marks the end of an era in Bollywood, as fans and colleagues remember his contributions to Indian cinema.

A Stellar Career in Bollywood

Born as Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar moved to Delhi after the Partition and later pursued a career in acting. Inspired by the freedom struggle and the ideals of patriotism, he adopted the screen name "Manoj Kumar" in tribute to the revolutionary Bhagat Singh. He made his acting debut in 1957 with *Fashion* but gained recognition with *Kaanch Ki Gudia* (1960). However, it was his role in *Hariyali Aur Rasta* (1962) that established him as a leading actor.

Manoj Kumar became synonymous with patriotic films, earning the nickname "Bharat Kumar" after his iconic role in *Upkar* (1967), which he also wrote and directed. The film, featuring the famous song *"Mere Desh Ki Dharti,"* became a symbol of national pride. His other notable works include *Purab Aur Paschim* (1970), *Roti Kapda Aur Makaan* (1974), and *Kranti* (1981), all of which reflected his love for India and its cultural values.

A Legacy of Patriotism and Social Messages

Manoj Kumar was not just an actor but also a filmmaker who used cinema as a medium to convey strong social and patriotic messages. His films often highlighted issues like poverty, corruption, and the importance of Indian traditions. *Roti Kapda Aur Makaan*, for instance, addressed the basic needs of the common man, while *Purab Aur Paschim* contrasted Indian and Western lifestyles.

His collaboration with music directors like Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal resulted in some of Bollywood’s most memorable soundtracks. Songs like *"Mere Desh Ki Dharti"* and *"Main Na Bhoolunga"* remain evergreen classics.
